The greatest commandment: " Love others as yourself!"

Tuesday February 28 2012

Hebrews 13:1 “Continue to love each other with true Christian love.”

It isn’t always easy to love those around us, especially if they have caused us hurts.  Many times, I have made excuses and argued with God saying, “Surely, Lord, You don’t expect me to love that person”?  I have discovered that it can only be accomplished with the infinite help of the Holy Spirit. It is possible to love with a “Christ like” love. We don’t always like everyone and we are not expected to agree with everyone, but we can, with Christ, love everyone.

The definition from The New Living Translation Bible: love: “The ultimate expression of God’s loyalty, purity, and mercy extended toward his people- to be reflected in human relationships of brotherly concern, marital fidelity, and adoration of God.”

There are many scriptures about love. The greatest commandment tells us to love the Lord our God with all our heart and with all our mind and all our soul and love all mankind. In 1Peter 4:8. We are told, “ love covers a multitude of sins.”

We are commanded to love, even though God knows we cannot always do that by ourselves.  He is ready and willing to send the “Comforter”, the Holy Spirit, to help us accomplish what we cannot do on our own and He knows us better than we know ourselves. The closer we walk with God, the easier it becomes for us to show His unconditional love.

Prayer for today: Thank you for your unconditional love for me, Lord. You know, better than anyone, my shortcomings and trespasses and you know how many times I have failed in truly showing love for others. Father, I come to you with a “big” request today, Please help me to love others with a love like Jesus.  Help me to dwell on the good things and not even see the negative side of others. Only with you is this possible, Lord. In Jesus name, Amen.
