Our Hero?

Who can harm us if God is for us?

Hebrews 13: 6.. “That is why we say with confidence, the Lord is my helper so I will not be afraid.  What can mere mortals do to me?”

When I watch a movie or TV show with a super hero as the star, no matter how hopeless the situation seems, I know that the hero can and will rescue the victim.  All kinds of gimmicks are used and always our hero comes through.  In James Bond movies, the hero, 007 always becomes the victor! At times the villain has a plethora of tricks in his “bag” but the Hero can always go “one better” in order to make his escape and capture the villain.

All classic literature or lasting literature uses this strategy.  In order for the story to be considered a classic or time honored tale, the hero escapes and captures the antagonist.  Often the hero also achieves the ultimate goal like saving the world from disaster, getting the “girl” or the gold or some other valued treasure.

The model for these stories is, of course, found in the Bible. The stories of David and Goliath, Daniel in the Lion’s Den, Joseph and his achievement of victory over the seemingly insurmountable circumstances, Ruth, Esther and many others are the hero’s of the Bible.  What gimmicks are used by these hero’s to win the battles?  The gimmicks are absent, it was the unshakeable faith in a God Almighty that enabled them to win the victories. they lived their faith, even under duress and persecution and in every instance the Creator delivered them.  Their super hero was the Mighty God.  They never lost their faith.

Hebrews 11:33-34 “By faith these people overthrew kingdoms ruled with justice and received what God had promised them.  they shut the mouths of lions, quenched the flames of fire and escaped death by the edge of the sword.  Their weakness was turned to strength.  they became strong and put whole armies to flight.”

It was the faith in God’s promises that carried them through victoriously, not to escape trials and battles, but to go “through” the fire and emerge as refined gold!

Our super hero is much more than a super hero who relies on man made gimmicks to escape or win the reward! He is very God, the creator of life.  Just think, we have His promise in Hebrews 13:6, the assurance that He is our helper.  The question, what can mere man do to me?  When God is on our side, nothing can harm us
Prayer for today: Heavenly Father, I am so thankful that you are a
God of power and promise.  What can harm me if you are on my side? Help me to have unshakeable faith in you.  In Jesus name, Amen.
